    with

    The Shee

    Mawkin

    Monster Ceilidh Band

A night dedicated to some of the best in British folk music. Three award-winning acts from the South, the North and the, well, very North – ‘Essex charmers’ Mawkin, ‘Tyneside terrors’ Monster Ceilidh Band and ‘sassy lassies’ The Shee – will be providing you with a night of foot-stompin’, barn-stormin’, high energy folk. So, grab your dancing shoes, crack those glowsticks, pin your ears back and get ready for the twists and turns of a new generation that have been making folk fun.

    Olivia Ross fiddle, voice

The ‘fresh, feisty’ (fRoots) Shee are exceptional. An all-female band with three powerful vocalists and an astonishing level of instrumental prowess, their diverse musical influences combine to produce an adventurous brew of folk, Gaelic and bluegrass. Their second studio recording, ‘Decadence’, (October 2010) went straight into the World Music Charts Europe. Individual musical achievements include BBC Radio Scotland’s Young Traditional Musician 2006, and the Critics Awards for Theatre in Scotland for Best Use of Music 2009. Members of the band have performed with Sting, The Unusual Suspects, Shooglenifty, Kathryn Tickell Band and Scandinavian group Frigg.

“Powerful, layered harmonies, striking rhythms and a unique folk sound!” Tim Cumming, Songlines

“Flirtatiously funky all-female band… a stand-out at the festival” The Scotsman

    Nick Cooke melodeon and vocals
Danny Crump bass guitar and vocals
    Lee Richardson drums and percussion

Folk rebels Mawkin come to Kings Place fresh off the back of the three-times BBC Folk Award nominated collaboration Mawkin:Causley. They are now looking to create a bold new sound that strengthens their instrumental roots and embraces a new, exuberant exploration into the traditional folk canon. Expect the Essex drawl of Dave Delarre’s vocals and guitar, the club-influenced beats of long-time producer and percussionist Lee Richardson, and a host of wild and emotive melodies from the frenetic fiddling fingers of James Delarre and the virtuosic bellowing of Nick Cooke’s melodeon.

“Mawkin temper natural dynamism with genuinely artful arrangements.” Colin Irwin, The Observer

    “Unconditionally Mighty.” Mojo

2010 saw the North East’s Monster Ceilidh Band nominated for best instrumental album by Spiral Earth, receiving a Time Out ‘Critics’ Choice’ honour, and appearing on the British Music WOMEX official CD. It also saw them take no less than twenty UK festivals by storm, and tour Russia. The highlight of their year was 8,000 mud-soaked punters screaming ‘Monster!’ during their headline performance at the Rainforest World Music Festival, Borneo. 2011 sees the release of a double album, fusing new electronic influences with the usual brand of quirky instrumental folk, played by some of the UK’s finest folk musicians.

“The coolest ceilidh band around.” Kathryn Tickell

‎”A Godzilla of a band with talent as deep as Loch Ness!” Jez Lowe

“The brilliant and exhilarating music of the Monster Ceilidh Band has its roots in tradition; but the combination of their talents has produced something innovative, contemporary, fresh and dynamic.” Grassington Festival
